Blood - N - Roses
Blood - N - Roses
Blood ties are stronger than granite. In the midst of all the chaos, the revolutions, the invasions, the insurrections, and turmoil stood someone that was in all likelihood not palatable to the ranchers of Refugio. Becerra in my opinion, was marked and watched closely. As we all know from previous posts, Becerra had drawn the ire of Power's and he in return had made Power's life a living hell during the initial years of the empresario's rule. It was also a fact that none of the Tejano politicians liked Power's, and so the feeling was mutual.
Yet Becerra continued making his presence in Refugio, even after the others had faded away. It was the fall of 1834 and the fake empresarios needed assistance with keeping a notary on staff to record all the inchoate land titles they were passing out. Becerra being a loyal servant to the Supreme Govt of Mexico, assisted with the task of documenting all the grants into a book entitled: Libro Becerra.
It was during this time that his youngest daughter, Francisca Gertrudis Becerra met and fell in love with a young Francisco de la Garza. She was very young, just a teenager. If my math serves me correct, she had her first child, Trinidad, when she was just 13 years old, and Francisco was 16 years old. They were both very young and full of hope. Soon after Trinidad came Genoveva, followed by Rosalia and finally Antonio de la Garza.
It was during all this shifting and moving around and relocating on the open free range that the eyes of those wolves in Refugio started noticing a growing family. I don't think so much at first, but eventually as Thomas O'Connor gathered strength and grabbed up land, he would occasionally cast his gaze on this young family. One thing is for sure, they knew that this was Don Carlos de la Garza's brother. They knew to hold ground; they knew to stay.
To be continued...
